CUSTOMIZING YOUR STREET SWEEPER - ALTERNATIVE FUEL (CNG)

In the past we have discussed our Global Street Sweepers often referring to them as Purpose Built units.   Our Front Steer Three Wheel Global M3 is one of a kind, safe, quiet and comfortable.   Our performance matched equal-width pickup broom and elevator system eliminates choke points and improves sweeping speeds. The 5.6 cubic yard hopper’s ribbed design eliminates rust traps and is mid-mounted for balanced weight distribution and superior loading characteristics.

Optional, Front-Articulating brush allows for extra reach to shoulders and center islands. Via In-cab joystick, the articulating front brush can be positioned on left or right side allowing for sweeping on right or left without changing seating positions.

Almost 30 years ago now, a Purpose built street sweeper that could reach speeds of 65 mph was introduced.   The idea was the same…creating a sweeper that has best visibility, with performance matched elevator system, long lasting dirt shoes, and with one of the biggest hoppers in the industry.   The idea worked and you will find many municipalities utilizing our street sweepers including major metropolitan cities such as New York City.   Of course with technological advancements came changes and upgrades. Disk brakes, powerful Cummins Engine, higher highway speeds (65mph) and Alternative Fuel options are just few innovative option available today.

               ALTERNATIVE FUEL – Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)

Compressed natural gas, or CNG, is natural gas under pressure which remains clear, odorless, and non-corrosive. Although vehicles can use natural gas as either a liquid or a gas, most vehicles use the gaseous form compressed to pressures above 3,100 pounds per square inch. It is produced both worldwide and domestically at relatively low cost and is cleaner burning than gasoline or diesel fuel. Natural gas vehicles show an average reduction in ozone-forming emissions of 80 percent compared to gasoline vehicles.

Not All Mechanical Street Are Created Equal!

Any mechanical sweeper should do a good job picking up a wide variety   of road debris. From heavy bulky material, trash, fines and leaves, a   mechanical sweeper needs to be versatile in its performance. However,   how the unit picks up material is as important as how much it picks up. If   you could do the same job with a unit that provides less time required for   maintenance and offers up to a 50% reduction in fuel consumption,  wouldn’t that be worth investing in?

A mechanical sweeper’s elevator is the most critical system the unit has.   It operates in the harshest of environments where it is constantly bombarded with various types of dirt and debris as well as moisture. The Global M3, MX3 and M4 purpose built sweepers employ a belt and sprocket system with aluminum flights and corded rubber squeegees that handle these conditions with excellent results. It is a system that is designed not only to provide high performance, but an increased life cycle and superior ease of maintenance compared to a full width belt conveyor system.

Imagine sweeping up a large item or something that is sharp. There is great potential to cut or tear the full width conveyor belt in a mechanical sweeper.

You Can’t Put A Price On Public Safety

- It is never a good idea to drive the wrong way down a one way street!!!

In a recent investigative report appearing in the December newsletter for World Sweeper Magazine, Ranger Kidwell Ross “looks at the advisability of sweeping against traffic instead of specifying a sweeper with curb brooms on both sides.” Here is an excerpt from the report:

We recently heard about a city in Iowa that – in order to save money – was specifying a sweeper with only a single curb broom. This was being done even though the city will be sweeping some one-way streets and islands.

This investigative report looks at the advisability of sweeping against traffic instead of specifying a sweeper with curb brooms on both sides. In it, the pros and cons are evaluated and potential alternative solutions are offered.

2011 Distracted Driving Statistics—By HealthDay

  • Approximately 86% of drivers said they ate or drank while driving at some point, and 57% said they do it “sometimes” or “often.”
  • Over 1/3 of drivers (37%) have sent or received text messages while driving, and 18% said they do it regularly.
  • Forty-one percent of adult drivers have set or changed a GPS system while driving, and 21% do it “more frequently.”Picture1

How about the sweeper operator that is required to watch his side broom rather than looking ahead whilesweeping? Or entry steps that you have to see through in order to see the road surface?

   Street sweepers have been around for a long time. Global manufacturing roots, date back all the way to 1947 and to Wayne Street Sweepers. The first street sweepers did not have a cab, the operator was completely exposed, there were no suspension, radio or any other creature comforts. Street Sweeper Caltrans Test

In 1990, the California Department of Transportation introduced what is now known in the sweeper industry as the toughest sweeper performance test in North America. The purpose of the test was to allow Caltrans a means of selecting only the sweepers that were tough and reliable enough to meet the brutal demands of sweeping more than 16,000 miles of the most diverse highways in the world—stretching to California’s borders with Oregon, Nevada, Arizona and Mexico. The street sweepers that successfully completed all tests were put into service, sweeping the winding High Sierras, performing post winter clean up and cleaning the wind blown desert roads and highways throughout the entire state.
